Save Water, Save Time in the Shower

One of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had was actually at a Hamptons Inn in Miami. You wouldn’t think that of a three-star hotel but it was perfect for a week long stay. We were looking at saving some money and staying at a reasonable but comfortable hotel. There was a La Quinta Inn up the block for the same price or at a lesser price. And in comparison, both offered a free continental breakfast and airport shuttle but with the Hamptons Inn, it was a new hotel at the time.

There were two things that made our stay so memorable. One was that everything was new like a new house. That’s a big plus for us because we feel everything is clean and unused. The second thing that I remembered most was the shower head.

There are a lot of shower heads on the market. Just go to your local home depot and check it the new fixtures. One time, Water Pik was the only oscillating shower head around. Now, everybody makes one. Delta, Moen, American Standard, etc. The list goes on and on. What made this shower head unique and sensational wasn’t the fact that it oscillated. It was how simple it looked and worked. It was not big but it gave me a big shower. It did not have a lot of controls on it, just one knob that made it shower wide or in a narrow stream. It did not matter how you turned the knob, it just delivered a perfect shower.

Some people would say that a good shower depends on the water pressure. That has some truth to that statement. I mean, if there was little pressure, it would take too long to rinse off. The water hitting your body would not be invigorating. And in a cold bathroom, the shower won’t warm you fast enough. Did you know that the water pressure depends upon how much pressure is in the pipes that lead into your home? In a new neighborhood, the water pressure is sometimes low to begin with. Then as more homes are built and the neighborhood grows, the pressure goes up.

The shower head has some blame to delivering a pressured wash too. Some shower heads will actually increase the pressure by limiting the water coming out. It’s like when you squeeze a garden hose to make the water spray harder. Shower heads will sometimes contain a washer to limit the amount of water coming out. This increases the pressure and saves water at the same time.

When we returned from our Miami trip, I went searching for a shower head that was like the one I found at the Hampton Inn. None of the local stores such as Rona, Home Depot or Ace Hardware had a model similiar to the one I used. My next place was on the internet and after a long and exhaustive search, I managed to find one. I ordered it and installed it in our ensuite. It worked well, just as good as how I remembered it in Miami.
