More and more people are spending time at home. It’s not just because the country is going through a recession, but people are just rediscovering their home and spending more quality time together with family.
One of the places that I have improved over the last few weeks was the bed. When we stayed at the Hotel Savoy in San Francisco, we came in from the rain and jumped in the jacuzzi. The hotel provided bath oils, soaps and sea salt mixtures, soft towels and luxurious robes. When we retired to bed, it was like sleeping on a cloud. The bed was so soft and comfortable. Normally, I like my mattress to be firm and the bed felt firm but soft, if that makes any sense at all. I think the mattress was firm but something on top was cushiony.
We both got off the bed and pulled the sheets over. To our surprise, there was something that resembled a duvet underneath the bed sheet. When we got home, we went to a Pacific Coast store and asked for a duvet that you sleep on. The store clerk didn’t know what we were talking about. She said a duvet is what you sleep with on top, not underneath you. I know that sounds silly but that’s what we saw. We walked around the store ourselves and when we saw a mattress pad, we decided to look further. There we found a cushy pad known as a featherbed. It was like duvet but thicker. There were two types, one filled with down and the other with a polyfill.
I chose the down filled featherbed because I like the warming/ cooling effect of down. When it’s hot in the summer, the down actually cools you down because of the trapped air between the feathers. When it’s cold, the down absorbs the heat that you give off and keeps you warm.
One thing you have to do with a down filled featherbed is that you need to put a bed sheet on top. Two reasons, one to keep the featherbed clean from your body sweat and second, to protect you from the odd feather that escapes. Featherbeds come in twin, queen and king sizes. Don’t try to shop for value here (like me). If you buy a king size featherbed for your queen size bed, you are going to get excess on either side of the bed. Just get the size that fits your bed.
