Steal of a Price

We played with our favorite golf pair yesterday on the Wintergreen Golf Resort in Bragg Creek. My wife tried out the Callaway FT-i driver that is on sale there for $399.99, a $100 saving from its regular price of $499.99. Less expensive is the FT-5 driver that is on sale for $299.99, a $100 saving from its regular price of $399.99. You have to expect prices like this when you are buying clubs from a proshop.

On her first attempt, she managed to outdrive all of the guys. She hit the ball so straight and long that it was almost an instant sale. I think she would have laid down the bills if I did not tell her that we could have a custom built (to her profile) a Callaway FT-i knockoff for under $200. She was sold.

We came home last night and entered her height, wrist to floor length and rev

iewed the shafts and swing speed. We decided to go with the GX Squared Ti Draw driver with 12 degrees loft, a Winn V17 AVS-Soft grip and a Pursuit Golf Technology M2T shaft. Her flex is A-Flex and because of her 5 foot frame, she needed -0.75 inches off a women’s standard length. The total price of this club with headcover was $114.29 which is a steal of a price.

GigaGolf Irons

Custom Clubs for less than $200

I went for a fitting and equipment evaluation session at Ace Clubworks in Calgary and now I can’t hit a thing. There is some voodoo going on here or he has cast a spell on me. He has a net set up in the back of his store hooked up to a monitor and computer. He gets you to hit with your favorite club and he measures the speed of your clubhead along with the path of your backswing and your downswing. It’s cool technology. After assessing this, he measures your clubs and checks the shaft frequency. Most of my Callaway irons were a mess according to him because the shafts were not stiff enough for my swing speed. On top of that, my driver was too short in his eyes and the loft was too much.

To modify my club, it would cost me $40 per club for his labor. A new shaft would cost me $80 and a grip would run me $10 to $15, depending on how expensive I wanted to go. The $80 shaft is a steal because he said he carries the $1000 shaft that Tiger Woods plays. A custom built iron would cost me $100 per club but it will be a Ping knockoff.

Alternative? After paying $85, I have the specs to go shopping online. I can set myself up for custom driver for less than $200 and

a whole set of custom irons for less than $200. If you are interested in this, check out the new custom club manufacturer on our site, later this week.
