A lot of us can’t afford to play Pebble Beach but I hear it’s one of the courses you have to play before you die. I met a couple once in Arcadia that plays Pebble Beach once every year around Thanksgiving. They said they met there in 1975 and have returned there every year since.
I always thought it would be nice to have a signature course somewhere in the world where my wife and I can go and play a round every year. No distractions, no work, just peace and serenity. I’m sure a lot of people do that already. If you do, which course have you chosen to play at?
I haven’t played a lot of courses but the ball display in my hallway will tell you differently. Believe it or not, I have over 50 logo balls in there and at least 100 more in a large vase next to the display. I decided to collect logo balls at every course I visited, but not necessarily played at. Some of these balls came from places like Pebble Beach, such as from the very private and exclusive club at Sherwood Country Club where the Tiger Woods’ Target Challenge is played every year. The course at Sherwood is a real nice walking course but with a membership fee of $325,000 and monthly dues of $50,000 - I don’t think I will ever set foot there with a golf club in my hand.
I’ve played a few private courses in Calgary, Alberta and enjoyed the courses there. The only one that I will mention is the Country Club of the Hamptons. The layout is very nice but last year, there was an aggressive hawk that guarded the right side of the fairway on the 18th hole. She would swoop down at golfers when she felt her nest was threatened. Another course in town, the Inglewood Golf Club has eagles that nested in one of the large oak trees. Every year, you can see the male eagle fly majestically above the fairway and show off his massive wingspan.
If you’re ever in the area, make sure you book a tee time and play there.
WestJet airlines flies from select US cities during the winter months but unfortunately, golf is not available until the third week of May. From Canada, WestJet flies from all major airports including Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax and more.
