When you think of cruising, you think of a Caribbean island with palm trees swaying in the wind and white sand beaches. When I think of golfing, I think about the same, a golf course with palm trees and white sand beaches they call bunkers.
There are a lot of interesting golf courses to play in the Caribbean. One of them to take note at is the “Britannia Golf Course” at the Hyatt in Grand Cayman. This is one course that you have to play on before you die. To play here, you have to purchase a special golf ball called the “cayman ball”. The cayman ball is the same size as a regular golf ball but the dimples are inside out. It looks like the ball has measles.
Anyways, if you normally hit 300 yards with a regular golf ball then with the cayman ball, your drive would only go about 100 yards. The cayman ball is designed to fly about a third of the distance a regular golf ball would go. By playing with a cayman ball, the course that is only 2,759 yards would play just as long as a normal PGA tour course and that’s the way Jack Nicklaus designed it to be.
Another course on the circuit to play at is “Mahogany Run” in St. Thomas. This course used to be one of the most prestigious courses around but it ran into some financial difficulties after hurricane Marilyn caused some major damage. The course was purchased by Ginn Resorts in 1994, a Florida based company who reconstructed a lot of the damaged holes and since then, the course has regained its title.
Many of the cruise lines have a golf program on board. Royal Caribbean’s Golf Ahoy and NCL Golf prearranges tee times, cart rentals, golf club rentals and mini-tournaments at ports that the ships sail into. You can bring your own clubs or you can rent clubs at the course. One new idea is to rent clubs in Florida before you get on the ship. That way, you can save yourself the hassle of flying in with your golf bag. I know I prefer that, instead of running the chance of losing your clubs in transit.
