Camcorders for Less than $200

I see that both Wal-mart and Superstore are selling $100 camcorders. As a camera buff, it is hard to trust any of these units because they are geared for children, not serious travellers like you and me. On our site, I have come up with a list of serious camcorders or video cameras that deserves a second look. There are two brands to consider, DXG and iSonic.

DXG 569V HD Camcorder - Best Price

Lets start with the DXG569V, a nice high definition camcorder with 32MB internal memory, SD/SDHC slot, 5 megapixels cmos sensor, 3.0 inch TFT display and capable of 16:9 aspect ratio. The price? Under $150. That’s all, you ask?

If you think you prefer the more traditional camcorder look andxg569vd feel, you might go for the lesser model, the DXG566V which practically has the same features as of the newer DXG569V. The price is the same too. Going down the scale, the DXG565V is a nice camcorder but it does not record in high definition. For that, you save about $30. If you don’t have a HDTV or don’t plan to upgrade then this camcorder is for you. That’s hardly a good reason to not buy a HDTV because the prices of LCD TV’s are coming down fast. Anyone can afford one now.

In the iSonic line, you have the HD787 which records in high definition like the high ended DXG model. The difference here is about $30 but you get 64 MB internhd787al memory which is double that of the DXG569V an

d the digital stills are interpolated to 12 megapixels. On top of that, you get image stabilization but a smaller (by half inch) LCD screen.

With the price of electronics these days, there is no reason why you should lug around a ten pound Handycam and a digital camera. Now you can have both, a digital camera and video camera in one unit.

7-in-1 Camcorder for under $170

I don’t know about you but when we travel, I bring along a lot of my creature comforts. For instance, this weekend I am planning a drive out to the Tyrell dinosaur museum out in Drumheller. I plan to bring my Sony Handycam, Pentax Z10 camera, HP laptop, Apple iPod Touch and my Bose headphones. That’s a lot of electronics to bring but these are my essential travelling tools. What I hate most are the adapters that comes with these devices for charging. I am still on the lookout for an universal adapter that fits all these units. They have a unit at the Source for about a hundred bucks but there are no tips for some of these devices - some but not all, so it only comes halfway to my needs.

I have been wanting to upgrade my Handycam for some time. See my earlier blogs on HD camcorders. One reason I have not committed on a new one is because technology has a tendency to change on the go. I always said if you don’t need it, don’t buy it. For example, if I had followed my impulse, I would have bought the latest and greatest camcorder on June 17, the DXG-566. Just 2 weeks later, there is the iSonic HD787 unit that is a 7-in-1. It has everything I need in it such as a 5MP still camera, camcorder or video camera that records in high definition, its small and compact, sleek in design and has 64MB internal memory with a slot for SD cards. With SDHC cards coming down lately, it really is a good time to get a camcorder or digital camera that uses SD cards. You can buy a 2GB SDHC card on sale at Future Shop for $19.95.

Clearly this is the one to get if you are looking for an affordable camcorder that can record in HD and has a built-in digital camera capable of shooting a decent picture. At 5MP, that would save me from bringing two electronic devices on my travels. I can now bring a camcorder and have a decent digital camera if I wanted a still shot instead of a moving picture.
