Save Money by Renting a Yaris

With today’s fuel costs, it pays to rent an economy sized vehicle. When I go to Vancouver, I like to book a Toyota Yaris because it’s fun to drive and it hardly uses any gas. On one of our adventures, we drove the family down to Bellingham and back, plus run around all over Vancouver on one tank of gas.

Renting a Yaris is great for two, possibly three people. Parking is a breeze too, especially in downtown Vancouver. It’s peppy enough to get around town fast and when you fold the seats down in the back, it can fit two sets of golf clubs easily. There’s even room for 2 pull/ push carts.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Why Rent from Enterprise

In February 2007, Enterprise Rent-a-Car turned 50. To commemorate this achievement, Enterprise formed a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant 50 million trees over the next 50 years.

What can one tree do for the environment? A single tree can absorb a ton of carbon over its lifetime. The 1 million trees planted by Enterprise this year when they reach maturity will absorb as much as 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide and produce 10,000 tons of oxygen per year.

How-to Save Money on Car Rentals

I think it’s time to write another blog about saving money with coupons. This time, I want to show you how to save money with car rentals. I find it amusing when I line up to pick up my car at the airport and overhear a conversation about how good their rate is. After hearing their price, I shake my head and giggle inside because I’m paying less.

Getting a good discount doesn’t require any magic nor putting a curse on anyone. It takes a little researching but aside from that, anyone can do this and write about it. Where do we begin?

1. Are there any specials on the website? Usually there is a tab on the car rental website listing all the specials available. If it’s a weekend rental then look for weekend specials. If it’s a week then look for weekly specials, etc. Take down the coupon code or discount code that you will need later when you book. Some companies expect you to print out their coupon and give it to them at the counter. I know Alamo is one of them.

2. Does the company you work for have any affiliations? Most corporations in the US and Canada have corporate rates. These companies have negotiated a rate with car rental agencies. The amount of discount will vary, depending on the size of the company. A saving of 10% is usual, but some affiliations can save up to 25%. Ask around for a corporate rate then ask which company is the affiliation with. This is usually called different things but note it down.

With these special codes noted down, go to the car rental agency’s website and enter the reservations area. Enter your trip information then enter the corporate code. If you have coupon codes, enter it into the appropriate fields.

Having an affiliated code is best to maximize savings. If you’re unsure about your corporate code or if your company is not affiliated with any car rental agency, check with us first because you don’t want to pay too much.

No promo codes? No problem.

Wouldn’t it be nice to go to one site and enter your travel plans then have your computer automatically use the best promo code to get you the best price? Now you could with Orbitz.

The advantages of using a travel website such as Orbitz to rent a car, hotel or airfare is because they use quantity pricing to offer you the best deal at any one time. Promo codes are used to identify “campaigns” which is advertising talk. By entering a promo code, you are joining a group and you get a designated group rate.

When you use Orbitz, you are doing the same thing but without the promo code. Orbitz negotiates a group rate with every travel supplier to get you the best deal.

Hotwire

No time to shop? No problem.

They say to get the best deal, you have to shop around. But sometimes, there’s no time to shop around so what do you do?

Enter Hotwire and the Travel Ticker - With savings of up to 40% off and car rentals as low as $9.95 per day, it is worth the time to check this out. With Hotwire, it is possible to find a car for as low as $4.95 per day. I did when I flew into Maui last fall. After booking a car with Alamo for $167 per week, I decided to check Hotwire a few days before leaving and guess what?! Surprisingly, there were cancellations and I managed to pick up a car for $4.95 per day or $35 per week.

It was bad luck when I arrived in Maui because my bags were delayed. After waiting for over an hour, I managed to get to Thrifty’s where they had run out of compact cars to rent. They ended up giving me a Nissan X-Tera SUV for the week. Renting a SUV in Maui made sense when we went to Hana and did some offroading.

At $4.95 per day, it was worth every dollar.
