Spring Thaw - Get Out There

You would have to think that people who upload videos to YouTube from their Caribbean cruise just 8 hours ago, aren’t having (enough) fun. Either that or they haven’t had enough rum.

A Caribbean cruise is an excellent pick for Spring Break or should I say, Spring Thaw. The only thing cold there will be the frozen Pina Colada that you will sip while you lounge on the beach. Remember to pack the sunscreen with the highest SPF you can find because the sun is really hot down there. And pick up one that is waterproof because you will be on or in the water a lot.

Checking with our cruise supplier, there are 433 Caribbean cruises in March, with a little over 168 cruises from Carnival - the party ship. Even with caribbean in its name, Royal Caribbean only offers 93 cruises. They vary in length but the ones that are most popular are the 7-9 nights.

I’ve sailed east, west and south and this is what I think. If you think you’re going to be in the water alot then go west. If it’s ports, shopping and sightseeing then take go east. If you want a bit of everything, shopping, sightseeing and relaxing then go south.

On a western caribbean cruise, you’ll most likely want to snorkel, scuba or take a glass bottom boat in Grand Cayman and Cozumel, two destinations that are known for spectacular diving and snorkeling. Non-swimmers can choose to visit the turtle farm or the Mayan ruins in Tulum. Something different is to take a short ride out to Stingray City where you can feed and get close and cozy to stingrays in their natural habitat. In Ocho Rios, the popular choice is to climb Dunn’s River Falls, a 600-foot hike over rocks and crashing waters. You can kayak to the foot of the falls or bike there, if you want more exercise.

On an eastern caribbean cruise, you can shop for gold and jewelry in St Thomas  or hop over to St John, the quietest, smallest and most secluded of the three US Virgin Islands to do some snorkeling, eco-hikes and sunbathing.

On a southern caribbean cruise, depending on the cruise line, you might sail as far south as to Roatan, Honduras and Belize. More popular cruises will visit the ABC islands known as Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. There’s not much history to visit here but you can kick back and stroll through the quaint towns. Or you can go snorkeling there and see the colorful parrot fish .

As my other blogs have indicated, cruising allows you to sample the ports and in the Caribbean, introduce you to calypso music and jerk chicken. With so many exotic places to go, a cruise is the only way you can see it all. Like they say in the Royal Caribbean commercial, get out there!
